“Bridegroom” gets Oprah’s stamp of approval, to make world premiere on OWN on Oct. 27
How absolutely cool is this?
Bridegroom, the deeply-moving documentary I’ve been writing about a lot this year, has received the golden touch of the one and only Oprah Winfrey!
Shane Bitney Crone, whose love story with late partner Tom Bridegroom is told in the movie, made the announcement today on Facebook:
I am thrilled to announce that BRIDEGROOM is going to be making its world television premiere on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network on October 27.
I’m immensely grateful to Oprah and everyone at OWN for helping share my story which will hopefully generate discussions and open hearts and minds.
I truly couldn’t be more honored to have BRIDEGROOM premiere on OWN. This film would not have been possible without your support. This isn’t just our film, this is your film too. To me this film represents all people who have been condemned and ostracized just for being who they are and loving who they love.
The television premiere will come less than two weeks after the film is released theatrically in Los Angeles on October 18.
The movie premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival this year and won the Audience Award at Outfest in LA which is where I saw it and shed more than a few tears.
After six years together, Tom Bridegroom was killed in an accidental fall. Shane’s grief was compounded when Tom’s family banned him from the funeral and tried to erase all evidence of their happy life together.
On the one year anniversary of Tom’s death, a grieving Crone had had enough. He poured his feelings into a YouTube video called It Could Happen to You and it changed his life.
Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, the creator of the TV classic Designing Women, had met Tom and Shane at a wedding and later saw the video. She contacted Shane about making the documentary that has now gotten the stamp of approval from Oprah.

The Supreme Court ruling was indeed a milestone, but for some it would prove too late. Like my vivacious and gay Great Uncle Harry.
A “confirmed bachelor”, my Uncle Harry was, next to a waiter passing the champagne, the most sought after man at a mid-century wedding. The single gals buzzed around him like bees to honey. The thing of it was, Harry’s come hither eyes weren’t directed to the bevy of beauties, they were more directed at the Best Man. Friends thought him picky, an odd man out in a world geared to the married set. Harry was born too early to witness a wedding cake topped by 2 grooms or a time when his come hither eyes would be able to gaze more openly to the possibilities that were denied him.
