Brett Claywell talks about developments for his character of Kyle on “One Life to Live”

I always look forward to Anthony D. Langford’s must-read weekly Gays of Our Lives soaps column on AfterElton.com. It is filled with analysis and other juicy tidbits. This week’s column, posted earlier today, gives a preview of an interview One Life to Live actor Brett Claywell did with Brandon’s Buzz website that is set to air today.

I’m going to pass along some of the exclusive quote’s Anthony has in the column.

Brett plays the gay character of Kyle who is trying to get over his former love Oliver (Scott Evans) and enjoy his new relationship with gay activist Nick (Nicolas Rodriguez).

“Kyle could definitely be intimidated by Nick,” Brett says. “Kyle’s the ‘Hey, I got no problems with my sexuality,’ but then here comes a guy who doesn’t just not have problems with it, he’s got a megaphone! Hung around his neck with a lanyard! It’s, like, he has it on him at all times! I think there’s less intimidation, I think there’s just more pressure. Nick is very strongly motivated with the things that he wants, and Kyle is one of the things that he wants, and when somebody wants something and that thing is kinda hesitant, you know, it creates tension.”

Brett is straight off screen but both his on-screen lovers are played by openly gay actors. He explains how he gets into character: “I just believe that Brett exists between “Cut!” and “Action!” and Kyle exists between “Action!” and “Cut!” and that you have to be able to turn it on and off, and be in that moment where nothing else exists…. It never feels like acting to me. I feel like I can do what I want to do, and I don’t have to try to do anything else. It just feels right.”
