Breakfast w/Greg: New Streep movie; Gay commercials; Ryan Gosling; Nadal is back; Roddick milestone
COMMERCIAL BREAK: Brayn Safi takes a humorous look at television commercials for Current TV – specifically gay commercials which, apparently, there are more of than we think!
RAFA RETURNS: A lot has changed in the world of men’s tennis since Rafael Nadal last struck a ball in competition. That was way back in May at the French Open when he lost a fourth-round match to Robin Soderling.
Until then, the sexy Spaniard with the killer abs had been on the kind of roll that few players have got to enjoy: he was the world’s number one tennis player, the reigning Wimbledon and Australian Open champion and four-time defending French Open winner. He had also won the Olympic Gold Medal in singles at the Summer Olympics.
That was then.
His shocking loss in Paris now seems to have been due to knee problems that may or may not be behind him. And during his absence, others stepped into the void. Roger Federer is once again the top-ranked player. He is on a 19-match winning streak that includes winning the French Open for the first time and his sixth Wimbledon crown and heads into this month’s US Open as a heavy favorite to win for the sixth straight year.
He arrived in Montreal on Wednesday and began practicing for The Rogers Cup which he won last year (I still call it the Canadian Open). He will also compete in a warm-up tournament in Cincinatti as he hopes to be ready to try and win the US Open for the first time.
We’ll see if Rafa is strong enough physically to regain dominance but I think even more difficult with be conjuring up the mental edge he has had over players – including Federer – in the past few years. Federer has regained his aura of invincibility which Nadal had managed to shatter and the two Andys – Murray and Roddick – are quite keen to bag some big trophies as well.
Speaking of Roddick, congratulations are in order for the appealing American star. On Thursday, he recorded his 500th match win as a pro!
Andy beat fellow American Sam Querry 7-6 (4), 6-4 in the third round of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington D.C. He becomes only the fourth active player to have reached that milestone. The others are Federer (obviously!) as well as former number ones Lleyton Hewitt and Carlos Moya.
Congratulations Andy!

Meryl’s new movies is a delight! I’m pretty confident you will like it. As for favorite Meryl movies (in no particular order): Angels in America, Kramer vs. Kramer, Devil Wears Prada, Adaptation, Music of the Heart, and The Hours. Enjoy the film!

One of my favorites is “Sophie’s Choice.” And I loved the gay commercials! Thanks for sharing that clip, Greg.

Ironically, Ryan Gosling was only in 3 MMC episodes before he was dropped by Disney for delinquent behaviour, according to Ryan himself in an interview.
Shortly after MMC, Ryan was in the Canadian teen series Breaker High in which he was one half of the geeky and goofy comic relief with Tyler Labine (Bert Wysocki on “Reaper”). Perusing the cast list, it appears these two jokesters were the only ones from that show to make it big in Hollywood. However, one of the original hunks Scott Vickaryous did have a supporting role on Eating Out 2.

I’ve never been moved by a Streep performance, always see the acting; only one I enjoyed: Postcards from the Edge. It suits what I view as her phoniness. (I love her in interviews though. And saw her once, in 78 or 79 on Columbus or Amsterdam and 81st or so, coming out of a supermarket; she was wearing a blue suit, with a white shirt, her hair over her right shoulder.) Sometimes, when I see clips of her performances I can see what others talk about, like her singing scene in Ironweeds, I think it’s called. But I’m not sold. The clips for this movie are very enticing; I think she’s getting her third.

Out of Africa was one of my favorites. She was excellent in it.
