Breakfast w/Greg: New Streep movie; Gay commercials; Ryan Gosling; Nadal is back; Roddick milestone

There are some guys who clear their calendar and are the first in line to see something big and noisy like Transformers 2.
I am not one of those guys.
But when Meryl Streep has a new movie out, that’s a different story! I was lucky enough to be at the world premiere of her previous film, Doubt, which opened AFI Fest and while I didn’t get an interview, I did get a nice wave from the great actress as she strode into the ArcLight in Hollywood.
Today marks the release of Miss Streep’s latest movie Julie & Julia in which she plays the famous chef Julia Child. I’m planning to go see it this afternoon. Reviews have been good so far but the truth is, Meryl never lets you down.
For someone who has been starring in movies for more than 30 years, it’s just so incredible that she continues to surprise and delight us. Doubt was one of her greatest performances and should have won her a third Oscar while her last two summer hits, The Devil Wears Prada in 2007 and last year’s Mamma Mia were sensational.
It remains to be seen if Julie & Julia will crack my top five all-time favorite Streep films. Here is the current list: 1. Postcards From the Edge 2. The Devil Wears Prada 3. One True Thing 4. Heartburn 5. Bridges of Madison County.
I’d love to hear from some of you today and find out what your favorite Meryl movies are!

RYAN RIDES: Photos of Ryan Gosling out and about – and looking insanely hot – are making their way around the blogosphere.
So why are they causing such a buzz?
I think it’s because it’s not often we get to see Ryan in heartthrob mode. Even though he’s as handsome and sexy as they come, he’s an actor first which he has shown in his Oscar-nominated role in Half Nelson, his acclaimed performance in Lars and the Real Girl and more than holding his own opposite Anthony Hopkins in Fracture.
Ryan’s biggest hit has been the romantic drama The Notebook and he has starred in The United States of Leland and Murder By Numbers. What you might now know is that Ryan was one of the mousketeers on The Mickey Mouse Club during the Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears era.

COMMERCIAL BREAK: Brayn Safi takes a humorous look at television commercials for Current TV – specifically gay commercials which, apparently, there are more of than we think!

RAFA RETURNS: A lot has changed in the world of men’s tennis since Rafael Nadal last struck a ball in competition. That was way back in May at the French Open when he lost a fourth-round match to Robin Soderling.

Until then, the sexy Spaniard with the killer abs had been on the kind of roll that few players have got to enjoy: he was the world’s number one tennis player, the reigning Wimbledon and Australian Open champion and four-time defending French Open winner. He had also won the Olympic Gold Medal in singles at the Summer Olympics.

That was then.

His shocking loss in Paris now seems to have been due to knee problems that may or may not be behind him. And during his absence, others stepped into the void. Roger Federer is once again the top-ranked player. He is on a 19-match winning streak that includes winning the French Open for the first time and his sixth Wimbledon crown and heads into this month’s US Open as a heavy favorite to win for the sixth straight year.

He arrived in Montreal on Wednesday and began practicing for The Rogers Cup which he won last year (I still call it the Canadian Open). He will also compete in a warm-up tournament in Cincinatti as he hopes to be ready to try and win the US Open for the first time.

We’ll see if Rafa is strong enough physically to regain dominance but I think even more difficult with be conjuring up the mental edge he has had over players – including Federer – in the past few years. Federer has regained his aura of invincibility which Nadal had managed to shatter and the two Andys – Murray and Roddick – are quite keen to bag some big trophies as well.

Speaking of Roddick, congratulations are in order for the appealing American star. On Thursday, he recorded his 500th match win as a pro!

Andy beat fellow American Sam Querry 7-6 (4), 6-4 in the third round of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington D.C. He becomes only the fourth active player to have reached that milestone. The others are Federer (obviously!) as well as former number ones Lleyton Hewitt and Carlos Moya.

Congratulations Andy!

  1. Meryl’s new movies is a delight! I’m pretty confident you will like it. As for favorite Meryl movies (in no particular order): Angels in America, Kramer vs. Kramer, Devil Wears Prada, Adaptation, Music of the Heart, and The Hours. Enjoy the film!

    Mark Kellam says:

One of my favorites is “Sophie’s Choice.” And I loved the gay commercials! Thanks for sharing that clip, Greg.

  3. Ironically, Ryan Gosling was only in 3 MMC episodes before he was dropped by Disney for delinquent behaviour, according to Ryan himself in an interview.

Shortly after MMC, Ryan was in the Canadian teen series Breaker High in which he was one half of the geeky and goofy comic relief with Tyler Labine (Bert Wysocki on “Reaper”). Perusing the cast list, it appears these two jokesters were the only ones from that show to make it big in Hollywood. However, one of the original hunks Scott Vickaryous did have a supporting role on Eating Out 2.

  4. I’ve never been moved by a Streep performance, always see the acting; only one I enjoyed: Postcards from the Edge. It suits what I view as her phoniness. (I love her in interviews though. And saw her once, in 78 or 79 on Columbus or Amsterdam and 81st or so, coming out of a supermarket; she was wearing a blue suit, with a white shirt, her hair over her right shoulder.) Sometimes, when I see clips of her performances I can see what others talk about, like her singing scene in Ironweeds, I think it’s called. But I’m not sold. The clips for this movie are very enticing; I think she’s getting her third.

  5. Out of Africa was one of my favorites. She was excellent in it.
