Billy Gillman performs ‘Crying’ live on ‘The Voice’

Billy Gilman continued his remarkable journey back to musical stardom on NBC’s The Voice on Monday and I know I’m not the only one rooting for him to go all the way.

On this week’s live show, Gilman seems to have assured himself a spot in the show’s top 12 with a powerful and moving performance of the Roy Orbison classic Crying.

Gilman built to a soaring finish that electrified the crowd and hit every note with confidence.

Gilman’s story has been one of the most compelling this season because he has already had success as a recording artist but it was a long time ago.

In the year 2000 withe the song One Voice he had a 20 hit on the Billboard country music charts and he became the youngest singer with a Top 40 hit.

Gilman’s album of the same name went double platinum the following year and two subsequent releases were certified gold.

He sold more than 5 million records and seemed to be settling in for a nice, long run.

But Gilman’s record sales began to slip and as he approached his 20s, music labels wouldn’t even take meetings with him.

There were whispers about his sexuality and for a time, he faded from public view until coming out publicly as a gay man in 2014..
