Barry Williams on “Brady Bunch” dad Robert Reed: “He was very private. He wasn’t ‘out out’”

Barry Williams was Greg Brady for five seasons on the classic sitcom The Brady Bunch then again on The Brady Bunch Variety Hour then again in the TV movie The Brady Girls get Married then again in the TV movie A Very Brady Christmas, and then again on the short-lived dramedy The Bradys.

Each of those times, he worked with Robert Reed who played the family patriarch in all of those incarnations.

In a new interview with Metro Weekly, Williams talked about Reed, who, it was posthumously revealed, was a gay man living a deeply closeted existence.

Here is an excerpt:

“That was very difficult and unfair,” says Williams of the early seventies. “You’re talking about a time period where there was a different…social consciousness and acceptability. Robert did not talk about it. He just didn’t. He was very private. He wasn’t ‘out out,’ but I can say that when you work together for that many years that closely — and we spent more time together as a Brady family than we spent with our own families — you get to know a lot about everybody. There really aren’t any secrets, even if they’re not being shared.”

One Remark

  1. I’d love to read the interview at Metro Weekly, but their website is terrible. The ads on both sides of the screen block their content. I gave up.
