Barbra Streisand’s “Gypsy” is going to happen!
I don’t know about you, but I was getting a little nervous that perhaps we’d never see Barbra Streisand in a big-screen musical again.
But the much-talked about big-screen version of Gypsy is indeed moving forward.
The Wrap reports today: Julian Fellowes, the Academy Award-winning writer of Gosford Park and Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning writer of Downton Abbey doing the adaptation for Universal, the studio confirmed Tuesday. Streisand is producing with Joel Silver. No director has been announced.
In her first starring movie role since 1996’s The Mirror Has Two Faces, Steisand will play the overbrearing stage mother Mama Rose. The star of such musicals as Funny Girl, Hello Dolly!, A Star is Born and On a Clear Day You Can See Forever last appeared in a big screen musical in 1983’s Yentl which she also directed.
Mama Rose was played in the original 1962 film by Rosalind Russell and in a 1993 television version by Bette Midler. The role has, of course, been one of the great showcases for a number of actresses on Broadway starting with Ethel Merman who originated it. Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly and Patti LuPone won Tony Awards for their respective revivals of the show while Bernadette Peters was nominated for one.
The play and movie is based on the memoir by Gypsy Rose Lee, a burlesque dancer, and the relationship with her mother, Rose, who has since become the prototype of a “stage mom” in pop culture.

David says:
Hmm, I can’t see it…..Hopefully it won’t turn out like Mame with Lucille Ball.
Vern Dufford says:
This would be a really GREAT!
Always thought at the right time Barbra would have been the perfect Mama Rose! Just like I felt, if she would have been around long enough Judy would have been the perfect Auntie Mame !
Now HOPEFULLY one of these dreams will come true!
I will be the first in line for the tickets!!!
2201 East says:
Could anything be as awful as Mame with Lucille Ball?
David says:
2201…..2nd. place would be Carol Burnett in Annie.
Vince says:
Let’s be honest. We love Lucy, but she couldn’t sing and she didn’t have a strong screen presence. Barbra excels in both. She’ll be swell! She’ll be great!
