Barbra Streisand is still all the rage at 71: Her “Back to Brooklyn” DVD tops Billboard sales charts
In her sixth decade of stardom, Barbra Streisand’s star power remains undiminished.
Her Back To Brooklyn concert DVD has reached #1 on the Billboard Top DVD Music Videos chart.
She has now topped the DVD charts five times.
On the CD charts, she has reached #1 nine times and is the only recording artist to have accomplished #1 albums in five consecutive decades. She has achieved 51 gold albums, 30 platinum and 13 multi-platinum.
The Back To Brooklyn concert DVD captures Streisand’s first musical performance in her native Brooklyn since she departed at age 16 to pursue her acting career and became one of the most popular and famous musical performers of her time. Throughout the concert, which includes nine songs she had never previously performed publicly, Barbra reflects upon her years growing up in Brooklyn.
Among the many highlights of the evening was the first-time ever pairing of Barbra and her son Jason Gould. Other artists joining her include trumpet player Chris Botti and the young Italian singing quartet, Il Volo.

It is a wonderful surprise when she shares the stage with others like Il Volo, Chris Botti and Jason. I love Jason’s voice and wish he would put out more songs and videos. She looks great for 71 and still has that amazing voice – a little huskier now but she can still hit those high notes when needed. Her tribute to Marvin Hamlisch during the show was sweet and sentimental. Love her. Hope she keeps singing and entertaining us for many years to come.

This concert on DVD is a fine collection and shows how Barbra Streisand in a very rare performer with a natural gift that few others can or will ever match. None of today’s performers have the class and talent gifted to Barbra.
Her vocal interpretations, unique beautiful inflections and rapport with the audience is truly a master class in how it is done, especially at this stage of her career.
There is much to enjoy on this lovely video however the change in her voice is evident. She is doing amazing tings with her lower register. And her heartfelt technique and style are as mesmerizing as ever. A job well done and one for the ages. A couple of the “reflective” songs such as “Here’s to Life” and “Some Other Time” will break your heart.
Jason Gould is a fine singer in his own right and not riding on Mom’s coattails. In fact he and Barbra could easily do a duets album of classic songs that neither has ever sung and I believe that it would be a great success. Chris Botti is a welcomed addition to this video as well.
Truth be told, I do have to say the at this point, Barbra may want to now consider steering away from these types of concerts. We have heard the hits over and over on live CD’s and DVD’s many, many times. Time to put the greatest hits away for now. If she want to perform live again I suggest 100% new material that she has never sung before. The great American songbook is out there for her to explore.
Also, time for her to consider getting behind or in front of the camera. Apparently the prospect of starring in “GYPSY” never materialized. We all know that the character rolls are out there if she wants em.
Directing is another option that needs to be considered. It would be very sad indeed if Barbra’s final motion picture credit ends up being the quite mediocre “Guilt Trip”.
She still looks great and has lots of various talents to share with her dedicated audience. We have been very lucky over the last 50 years!
