Barbra Streisand is set to make her first appearance as a presenter at Tony Awards since 1970

Trivia question: Barbra Streisand was nominated for a Tony Award in 1964 for her superstar-making role in the musical Funny Girl. But she did not win!

Who beat her?

The answer is at the end of this post.

That was Streisand’s second Tony nomination. The first came two years earlier for the musical I Can Get It for You Wholesale.

She didn’t win that year either.

So how is Streisand an EGOT (winner of the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony)? Because in 1970 she was given a special Tony Award as the ‘Star of the Decade.’

That she is – and star of every decade since then.

Anyway, it’s been announced that Barbra will be returning to the Tony Awards on June 12 as a presenter.

This would seem to have everything to do with her third album of Broadway showtunes due out later this year.

She is also scheduled to begin filming a new version of Gypsy in which she is to play Mama Rose.

Trivia answer: Streisand lost the Tony in 1964 to Carol Channing who won for her signature role of Dolly Levi in Hello, Dolly! Ironically, Channing was passed over for the film version of Dolly in favor of Streisand who had just won the Oscar for the film version of Funny Girl.
