Backstage at the Creative Arts Emmys with Neil Patrick Harris, Nigel Lythgoe and Ellen Burstyn
Since he didn’t go onstageat the Creative Arts Emmys Saturday to accept the award for Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, we were pleasantly surprised when Neil Patrick Harris joined the group backstage. (I was able to snap this photo of him with a nice, big smile!)
Neil, star of the online sensation, seemed determined not to take the spotlight away from writer-director Joss Whedon and the rest. But NPH said he wasn’t nervous about hosting the Primetime Emmys next week and said “it’ll be a good show.”
I asked Joss if the success of Dr. Horrible had changed the rules of Hollywood some. He said: “We feel like we gave them an opportunity to change the rules, we had nothing to do with the rules. We did this just out of our own love and our own anger and our own circumstances.”
Tyce DiOrio (right) of So You Think You Can Dance won the Emmy for outstanding choreography and came backstage with the show’s Nigel Lythgoe.
Lythgoe, an original producer of American Idol remarked on the exit of Paula Abdul and arrival of Ellen DeGeneres: “I think the magic of Randy, Simon and Paula has moved on and now we’ll see the magic of Ellen.”
He added: “What I love about it is she can put Simon down because Paula leaves a gap – she was able to do that, she’d hit him. … I think Ellen’s got a wonderful way with words. She’s going to speak for the public now.”
DiOrio is performing on tonight’s Video Music Awards during Janet Jackson’s tribute to her brother, Michael, and talked about the emotional rehearsal process: “We all looked around at each other and the music was playing and Janet was getting a little bit emotional. .. And then we saw the younger dancers doing the choreography and it was like a moment in the room that I don’t think you could replicate. It just was a moment in time among a bunch of dancers and choreography..”
Ellen Burstyn was gracious and reflective when she came backstage after winning her first Emmy (it was her fifth nomination) for Law & Order: SVU. She already has an Oscar and a Tony: “The older you get, the more you appreciate awards,” she said. “It’s fun.”
I asked Miss Burstyn how it was to act such meaty scenes with SVU Chris Meloni and Mariska Hargitay. She said: “They’ve been on the air for 10 years so it’s like a well-run ship and ecverybody’s really comfortable in their characters, very sure of their characters. .. It made me feel comfortable.”
“My memory is still good, I’m glad that hasn’t deserted me. I still have enthiusiasm for my work. If I get a good script, I get just as exciterd as I did at the beginning of my career. I respect my profession and I’m real glad to be part of it. I’m glad that I still strive for as high a level as I can.”

Great stuff! I don’t even watch TV and I’m fascinated. Also, please keep us posted on the Serena debacle. I wonder if anyone sitting behind the lines woman had a flip cam? And when are you going to post a video of the through-the-legs shot?
