Anna Paquin on being bisexual: ‘For a bisexual, it’s not about gender. That’s not the deciding factor for who they’re attracted to’
Oscar winner Anna Paquin, who plays a telepathic vampire lover on HBO’s True Blood, surprised many when she came out as bisexual in 2010.
In the new issue of Zooey magazine, she talks about how people are skeptical that someone can truly be attracted to both sexes.
‘I’m sure for some people saying they’re bisexual feels less scary than making a statement that they’re gay,’ she says. ‘For me, it’s not really an issue because I’m someone who believes being bisexual is actually a thing.’
‘It’s not made up,’ she adds. ‘It’s not a lack of decision. It’s not being greedy or numerous other ignorant things I’ve heard at this point. … For a bisexual, it’s not about gender. That’s not the deciding factor for who they’re attracted to.’

Brandi says:
As a bisexual woman, I am loving what she’s saying here, because she’s absolutely right. This is a conversation that bisexual people frequently have to have with both straight and gay/lesbian people. I’m so glad to see someone as famous as she is not only identifying publicly as bisexual, but also continuing to reinforce that identity rather than shying away from it, and speaking out about bisexuality to counter these negative stereotypes. 😀

I agree with both these women. I went to a late night dinner with a group of out gay and straight people. It reminded me how much I do not belong to either of these groups. Wish I’d come to this understanding earlier in life but am very comfortable with how I indentify now.
