Retiring Andy Roddick wins at US Open: “I’m going to try to stick around a little longer”
Andy Roddick extended his final US Open appearance with an easier-than-expected second round victory tonight over Australian Bernard Tomic.
Roddick’s decision to announce his retirement was a shocker but it now feels so right that he is giving his many fans and his fellow players the opportunity to say goodbye and to let him see how much he is appreciated and admired.
He really has been one of a kind and I hope he can put together one last run at Flushing Meadow where he won the title in 2003 and lost in the finals in 2006.
His amazing press conference on Thursday has set up the perfect ending to his career no matter what happens because we know he is at peace with the decision.
“I’m going to try to stick around a little longer,” Roddick said after the match.
He next plays 59th-ranked Fabio Fognini of Italy and if he gets through, could play 2009 US Open champ Juan Martin del Potro in the fourth round.

Watching Andy’s match last evening was so exciting….and so sad for me personally since I just *love* him. No one brings as much excitement to the courts as Andy does. Besides, he’s so articulate and witty. He’s much too young to retire, in my opinion. Of course, I’m being selfish because he’s my favorite player.
