America’s “Gaysian Sweetheart,” the brilliant actor and comedian Alec Mapa is 45 today!
Maybe you’ve seen Alec Mapa in his recurring role as fashion reporter Suzuki St. Pierre on Ugly Betty or as Gaby’s pal Vern on Desperate Housewives or teaching Adam Sandler a thing or two in You Don’t Mess With the Zohan.
This gifted force of comedy nature is first-rate in all he does but never funnier than when he is on stage live. This man, who turns 45 years young today, is pee-your-pants funny!
A few years back at the GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles, Alec walked out after Martina Navratilova left the stage and introduced himself as Sandra Oh. Then he corrected himself: ‘It’s me, Alec Mapa, America’s Gaysian sweetheart!” He wanted everyone to know that no, he is NOT Rex Lee: “I’m not on ‘Entourage’ all right? I know we all look alike but make a fricken effort!”
On his Desperate Housewives co-star Eva Longoria he said: “She has more gay men working on her than George Michael in a public bathroom!” Then he added to anyone who was offended: ‘Don’t boo me cuz you know you’re going to tell that at the office on Monday.” Mapa gave that audience a little insight into what it’s like on the set of “Desperate Housewives”: “It’s like a circuit party with craft services! It’s a REALLY gay set.” Then he took on the then-U.S. President: ‘George Bush is going down faster than a fat kid on a corn dog!” “Don’t you miss the days when presidents just screwed interns insteads of entire civilizations?”
Alec long been out and proud and I love this quote he gave to Broadway World a few years back about that: “I live in LA which is a big gay bubble but when I’m in Ohio, Colorado or the deep south – anyplace where people don’t feel safe to be their authentic selves 24/7 I realize that being an out person in the mainstream media makes an enormous difference. I get tons of MySpace messages from gay teens and they all say “Thank You for being yourself. It’s made me braver in my own life.” That sends me to the moon.”
Alec, you send us to the moon with your genius. Happy birthday, and thank you!
