It was at the start of his career and he was cast in an Irish soap opera as, get this, a creepy lumberjack character.

The part about him sawing a tree onto his pregnant girlfriend is a hoot!

The creepy lumberjack ends up getting killed-off but, thankfully, Alan managed to go on to great success on stage, on TV and in movies.
