Afternoon Greg: Revisiting the “Saved By the Bell” gang; wishing Tim Gunn a happy birthday
BAYSIDE HIGH 4EVER! Don’t they all look just great? Like they could just finish class at Bayside High.It’s funny – and so cool – that People magazine is featuring a Saved By the Bell reunion on its new cover because last week when I was with family in OC, my nephew and I got sucked into watching back-to-back episodes three days in a row.
I had missed seeing Zach (Mark-Paul Gosslelaar) , Slater (Mario Lopez) Jessie (Elizabeth Berkeley), Kelly (Tiffani Theissen), Lisa (Lark Voorhies) and maybe even Screech (Dustin Diamond) a little bit. Okay, not Screech at all. I think I only liked him in that very first season when Haley Mills was starring at the teacher and find it hard to disassociate the character with the creep Diamond has become (Could be why he’s not on the cover!).
Saved By the Bell was never one of those shows that I planned to watch, but whenever it was on and I happened upon it, I’d watch. It was this sort of comfort food and cute and scheming Zach Morris was just irresistible.The actors were all kids – unknowns – so it was fun to see so many of them become such big stars. Lopez is probably the most famous but Gosselaar has had the most success as an actor with roles on NYPD Blue, Commander In Chief and the current TNT legal drama Raising the Bar.
Theissen followed up the show with six seasons on Beverly Hills 90210, Berkeley starred in the infamous Showgirls and First Wives Club and has lately been doing television.
Lopez says in the People piece that he was unaware that he was wearing his hair in a mullet all those years: “I liked my hair long because I wanted to look like Mel Gibson in “Lethal Weapon. I didn’t even know I had a mullet! Looking back, I guess it does qualify.”
With such a young and attractive group, if you think there were some on-set romance you would be correct. Says Gosselaar: “All of us dated at one point or another — it was incestuous!
GREAT GUNN! Since I don’t watch Project Runway or really any reality shows these days except on occasion, I had not given much thought to the attractiveness of Tim Gunn – until I met him as we were both preparing to work the red carpet for the 2008 Academy Awards.
I thought he was very nice – and very attractive! So I want to wish this very stylish man a very happy 56th birthday today.

I can honestly say Saved By the Bell will go down in history as one of the worst shows out there. The acting was terrible and the social issues tackled were a joke.
I’m pleased that some of the cast has gone on to bigger and better things. Dustin Diamond doing the porn video and making an ass of himself on VH1 was even worse than this show.
