Afternoon Greg: Perez Hilton’s readers let him have it for posting pics of Dustin Lance Black
Trying to recover from a busy weekend and prepare for a few difficult days ahead: I’m traveling to Sacramento tomorrow morning to see off my beautiful friend, Walt, who died last week. I’ll be gone a few days but have pre-written several items and hopefully will have time here and there to post some more.
We’ll see how it goes.
Interestingly, the traffic for Greg In Hollywood just exploded today to about four times its usual pace. I checked and saw that a majority of the visits were coming directly from Perez Hilton’s site.
Perez had posted my piece on Dustin Lance Black being honored at Saturday’s Lifeworks event. In a post titled “Speaking from the Heart,” Perez wrote: “Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black (Milk) gave a very powerful speech at an event for gay youth in Los Angeles on Saturday.”
He added Check it Out and provided a LINK.
Mind you, it was Perez who just three days earlier posted three-year-old photos on his site of Lance having unprotected sex with an old boyfriend. I was surprised to see him now praising a man for whom he seemed to have a total lack of regard for when he posted the photos.
Apparently a number of Perez’s readers also felt he went to far. Here is a sampling of some of the comments that have been posted on his site:
styledumper: wow HYPOCRISY! after the SCANDAL that you spread, here you are acting like you support the LGBT community when all you’ve done is forcefully OUT people, and spread those defacing photos of one great LGBT Member.
perezisananimal: Is this the same guy you posted and then reposted pics of him nude having sex? Wow… talk about being two faced on your end … A powerful speech? You act like you’re supporting him and supporting the cause for us, yet you sent us a million steps back by posting those pictures you idiot
I hope you get sued for slander. That was horrible to do to anyone. KARMA IS A BITCH MARIO!
ROKN’PA: Now why don’t you do something for the gay community and “from the heart” since it seems like all you want to do in the gay community is out and post negative shit about us. I’m not sure if you have enough class to do “good” for the community since most of your posts about the gay community involves some kind of trailer trash mentality.
RJP3: Sorry Mario – you showed zero class, and zero feelings for another human being by posting X rated full insertion images of another man having anal sex with the writer…. you also chose to print an x rated oral image. Classless and something YOUR reputation as bad as it is will never recover from…. and I am a fan. This was a HUGE mistake and until you apologize on your blog and take down the link — you are not someone to admire or support.
nycinhamburg: I really hope there is legal action against you perez. you have to be stopped. You used to be great but overtime you have just gotten out of control. you speak for gay rights and equality but you post these pictures without thinking what it would cause except the traffic to your website
which means more advertisers requesting space and paying you big bucks. This is not just a gay issue this is a legal issue. if he was straight and you posted pictures that graphic the same thing would be happening. you can not post those kinds of pictures on site that doesnt check age. not only do kids come on here but after seeing those pics they think it is ok to have sex without a condom. gay or straight. and back to the gay issue, you really did just erase all the progress we made in this short year so far. do us all a favor and keep your mouth shut from now on before karma comes and bites you in that ass!! and it will!!

Hey Greg,
Glad to see that Perez supported your site. I am among the people who felt that Perez betrayed our community by reposting the DLB images. It would have been enough for him to cover the story that these photos existed but reposting them adds fuel to the already hot fire. It’s insulting for someone who claims to support the community of which he is a part to tear down an individual who has done so much for the LGBT community during a time when we needed a leader. I’m done with Perez.

I agree with Lesley. The posting of those photos is outrageous, and I applaud those commenters for telling him so. Perez Hilton has done little for the world in the way of making it a better or more interesting place — a far cry from the man who’s reputation he crapped all over.

I’m not sure why everyone is getting “so over the top” crazy about this. First, I would hardly consider Justin Lance Black a leader of the gay community. What has he ever done for me? He wrote one screenplay for Christ sakes and now everyone is acting like he is Harvey Milk incarnate. Get over it. So Perez Hilton published the photos. Who cares? Has it done anything to damage this kid or the gay community? NO! It is a gossip website. Nothing more. Why any of you are surpised that things like happen? Our society is obsessed with living on the Internet. We are obsessed with knowing everything that is going on in a person’s life the minute it haoppens. We Facebook, we Twitter, we IM…we can’t live unless we’re living on the Internet. Now you are all shocked that someone had the balls to publish another person’s naked photos? It’s not the first time it’s happened and won’t be the last. People need to get over themselves.

I’m a straight guy who came here chasing down this story (which is getting some attention on talk radio). I value privacy very much. I don’t think it’s right for anybody to be outed under any circumstances. Even Republican politicians who argue against gay rights. For those who think it’s okay to out a conservative Republican, all I have to say is: Hypocrisy and privacy go hand-in-hand. Hypocrisy is the means, in some cases, of preserving various private actions and inclinations.
As far as this Justin Lance Black case, Perez “Mario Armando Lavandeira” Hilton comes off as a total jerk. For some of you with long memories, there was a guy, Michelangelo Signorile, who said that his self-outing to his family was very painful, yet he was comfortable outing total strangers. Signorile knew he was hurting people, but did it anyway.
I see gays that out closeted gays as incredibly destructive. I am also surprised that actions like that of Hilton don’t get more criticism from the gay community. Why is that?
