Afternoon Greg: Maddow wonders where Obama is on DADT; College wrestlers speak, Federer rests.

Gloomy June has returned but I refuse to be a gloomy Greg!

Working out of Java Detour in West Hollywood having a gigantic cup of ginger peach iced tea. It was tough to find parking because West Hollywood Park is all blocked off in preparation for this weekend’s Pride. It’s gonna be a blast and I’ll be there to cover as much as I can.

Here are some items for ya before I embark on my afternoon or errands:
FIERCE ADVOCATE? Rachel Maddow on her MSNBC show last night used President Barack Obama’s own words to put his feet to the fire regarding his shocking silence on LGBT issues since taking office.

Obama has called himself a “fierce advocate for equality of gay and lesbian Americans” and yet his actions as President make the words quite hollow especially when it comes to continuing to allow gay and lesbian military personnel to be discharged under Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.

Maddow brought this up because the United States Supreme Court on Monday rejected a case that involved the ban on openly gay people in the military and their action came at the request of President Obama.

She told viewers: “It’s the first case to feature the Obama administration arguing at the Supreme Court against a gay soldier in favor of DADT, telling the court the policy is ‘rationally related to the government’s legitimate interest in military discipline and cohesion.’ I wonder what his record would be like so far if he weren’t such a ‘fierce advocate’ for gay rights?”

WRESTLERS SPEAK ON ESPN: Before you head out to the Pride festival on Saturday, be sure and watch ESPN’s Behind the Lines at 9 a.m. It will feature a segment on college wrestlers Paul Donahoe and Kenny Jordan. The are former Nebraska wrestlers kicked off the team after posing nude for the FratmanTV Web site. Donahoe transferred to Edinboro University while Jordan now attends Purdue.

The controversy did not diminish Donahoe’s wrestling skills as he is once again ranked first in the nation in his weight class and made it to the finals of the NCAA championships. Both guys maintain that the university over-reacted.

Says Jordan: “We didn’t kill anybody you know. We didn’t put anybody in a hospital. You know, we’re not selling drugs. We’re not bad kids,  you know. We did some porn. Get over it . . . we worked hard on our bodies. Why be ashamed of it?”

NO WARM-UP FOR ROGER: Winning the French Open was so emotionally and physically draining for Roger Federer that he announced earlier today that he would not be competing in a Wimbledon warm-up tournament in Germany this week – a grass court tournament in Halle that he has won five times.

“I sincerely apologize to the tournament organizers, my competitors, and my fans in Germany. I only hope they will understand that I still feel emotionally overwhelmed and exhausted by the incredible events of the past few days,” Federer said Tuesday on his Web site.

“It is hard for me to admit, but I simply cannot imagine giving my best effort in another tournament right away and I don’t want to risk injury if I am not 100 percent prepared. I need to rest and recuperate,” he added.

Roger has two weeeks to recover and practice on grass before the start of Wimbledon where he will seek to regain the title he lost to Rafael Nadal last year in a classic duel. Federer has also won Wimbledon five times.
