Afternoon Greg: Heath’s last movie premieres; Prejean’s mom gay?; Tom Cruise is still cute!
Happy Friday!
Thanks to all of you for, once again, giving Greg In Hollywood its busiest week yet. I’m floored by the increase in traffic this week, and very gratified. My pal, Eddie, has been in town for the past two weeks and every time he asks me how traffic on the site is, I seem to tell him: “Biggest day yet.” He’s getting suspicious but it’s the damned truth!
HEATH LAST MOVIE: The spirit of the late
Heath Ledger has been kept alive first by his Oscar-winning performance in
The Dark Knight and now by the film he was working on at the time of his death:
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.
The film was only able to be finished because three actors, Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell, agreed at the last minute to step in and complete his role. Apparently the magic mirror in the film makes this plausible. Director Terry Gilliam and Heath’s co-star Verne Troyer were at the Cannes Film Festival this week for the worldwide premiere.
In today’s LA Times, Gilliam said of Ledger: “People don’t know how brilliant he was. He was limitless. Anything you threw at him he could handle. … [His death] didn’t make any sense. Even now it doesn’t compute.”
An on-screen dedication at the beginning of a screening for the film reads, “A film from Heath Ledger and friends.”
CARRIE PREJEAN’S MOM A LESBIAN? Given that Miss California Carrie Prejean has come off as such an anti-gay bigot since answering a question as the Miss Universe pageant last month about same-sex marriage, little mini-scandal (breast implants) after mini-scandal (topless photos) keep trickling out.

I’d read an item on her mom,
Francine Coppola, being involved in a lesbian relationship until recently. But I didn’t run it because it was attributed to The Star which cannot be counted 0n as credible. But now
ABC News has gone with a story about Valerie Vetrano, an openly gay sales rep. from Corona, CA. who c0nfirms: “I did date her, I’m not going to dney it. But I’m not going to say anything else.”
Initially, there were reports of divorce papers stating that Coppola alleged that Carrie’s father was gay during arguments in front of the kids and vice-versa.
Whatever. But this whole thing does kind of prove one thing: Usually when someone is really anti-gay, there’s a deeper reason behind it beyond the religious ones they conveniently hide behind. This family isn’t screwed up because there may or may not be a gay parent or gay parents involved, it’s screwed up by lies and shame just like so many other families out there who refuse to accept themselves or each other for who they authentically are.
STILL CRUISIN: I know people get down on
Tom Cruise and he can seem sort of wacky sometimes. I think being a superstar for more than 25 years has given him a real alternate view of reality and somewhere along the line, he lost track of how he is perceived by the public – a public that makes or breaks a movie star who depends on them to buy tickets!
But as we can see in this photo of Tom and son Conner Cruise at last night’s LA Lakers game, the star of Top Gun, Jerry Maguire, Risky Business, Born on the Fourth of July, Mission Impossible and most recently, Valkerie, is still damned hot at 47! He’s also smart to be seen publicly like this with Valkerie out on DVD this week! It was a surprise hit at the box office and gave Tom a much-needed boost after his drop in popularity in recent years.
