Afternoon Greg: Good news in New Hampshire; Federer wins again; Edie Falco morphing into Phyllis Diller?

What is with this weather? It ticks me off! LA is real June gloomy today.

Ugh.

But hey, the same-sex marriage news out of New Hampshire is enough to brighten anyone’s day. Legislators approved a measure Wednesday that would make the state the sixth to allow gay marriage. Gov. John Lynch signed the bill at 5:20 p.m.

The governor had threatened a veto if the law didn’t clearly spell out that churches and religious groups would not be forced to officiate at gay marriages or provide other services.

The Senate first passed the measure today followed later in the day. The House where the gallery erupted in cheers after the 198-176 vote.

During an hour-long debate, Rep. Anthony DiFruscia said: “If you have no choice as to your sex, male or female; if you have no choice as to your color; if you have no choice as to your sexual orientation; then you have to be protected and given the same opportunity for life, liberty and happiness.”

New Hampshire’s law takes effect Jan. 1. Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, Vermont and Iowa already allow gay marriage. Last week, the California Supreme Court upheld Proposition 8 which banned same-sex marriage in the state after the court allowed it last year. Still, California has more than 18,000 married gay couples because the court ruling grandfathered in couples married during the months that it was allowed.

ROGER ROLLS ON: Okay, I am now completely obsessed with Roger Federer winning the French Open.

After struggling through the last three rounds, the world’s second-ranked player had a relatively easy quarterfinal victory in Paris on Wednesday and seems to be shifting into top gear. He is just two matches away from being proclaimed the greatest player of all time.

It would have been more satisfying if he had been able to play and beat Rafael Nadal in the finals but I’ll take it any way I can! After all, since the start of the 2005 French Open, Federer is 0-4 against Nadal at Roland Garros, 28-0 against everyone else. A win would make Federer only the sixth man in history with a career Grand Slam and would give Federer a 14th major singles title, tying him with Pete Sampras for the most in history.

He next faces Juan Martin del Porto who said: “Everybody wants Roger to win this tournament. If I can’t win this tournament, I want to see, next Sunday, Roger with the trophy.”

SEPARATED AT BIRTH? Last night there was a premiere party for Edie Falco’s new Showtime series Nurse Jackie.

Edie, a three-time Emmy winner, doesn’t look much like Carmela Soprano these days. In fact, when I saw this picture, it kinda looked like Edie was morphing into Phyllis Diller!
