AfterElton.com talks to Sam and Dan McMillen, the gay brothers competing on “The Amazing Race”

My friends are abuzz about the cute brothers on CBS’ Amazing Race. They are Sam and Dan McMillen, they are both gay and they are both single. AfterElton.com has a new chat with them posted. Here is a sample:

AE: Your bio mentioned that you came out to each other a year ago. Tell us the story of how that came about.
Sam McMillen:
Dan was studying at NYU for a summer, and I went there. I’d told my mom a few weeks before, and I was planning on telling Dan. So I got there and told him, and he gave me a high five and said, “No way! Me too!”
DM: I was proud being the younger brother and saying it to him first, even though he said he was planning on telling me. [laughs] That was a year and a half ago, and since then, we’ve really formed this new bond, and just been able to be really truthful with each other.
AE: How do feel about being perceived sex symbols for gay men?
SM:
Oh my gosh! [laughs]
DM: [laughs] That’s so funny!
SM: I mean…I don’t…people are… I don’t know! It’s so weird. We’re from Liberty, Missouri. This isn’t supposed to happen to us.
DM: I mean, we like the big city. I studied in New York, and we went to LA for the premiere, but we don’t know if that’s really our style. It’s so overwhelming. We really appreciate growing up in the Midwest. That kind of red-carpety feeling is kind of uncomfortable for us. We like our Midwestern values and staying out of the spotlight, but this is going to be a big learning experience for us and we’re excited about that.
SM: We hope everyone enjoys the fact that we’re presenting a new side of the gay community, and we’re not just the typical stereotypes. We’re hoping everyone will enjoy it, and they’ll continue to present us in a good way. [laughs]
