Adam Lambert says music industry ‘gatekeepers’ are afraid of gay men singing about same-sex love
Adam Lambert wants music industry gatekeepers to stop being afraid of gay love.
‘People are becoming less ignorant and the younger generation that’s coming up right now are like, “So what?”‘the openly gay pop star tells Digital Spy.
‘That’s melting into and affecting pop culture in general. There’s not as much of a reason to be scared of it, because people in general aren’t scared of it.’
But for now, the use of male pronouns by gay singers is still mostly being danced around.
‘There’s only so much you can do as an artist,’ Adam says. ‘Luckily we’re in a moment right now with streaming where there’s more power put back into the artist’s and audience’s hands.
‘But the gatekeepers who make a lot of the other big decisions in the music industry, those are the ones hardest to convince on certain things. That’s the reasoning for some of that pronoun stuff.’
Lambert came out publicly shortly after competing on American Idol in 2009 and although he was runner-up that year, he’s one of the most successful stars in the show’s history.
He released his third solo album, The Original High, in 2015. His 2012 album, Trespassing, made him the first openly gay artist to have an album debut at number one on the Billboard charts.

Rye says:
The truth is that he’s just not a very good song writer. Tracy Chapman, Melissa Etheridge, George Michael, Boy George, David Bowie, Freddie Mercury, Luther Vandross – these are just a few amazing poetic gay/bisexual songwriters/lyricist who wrote in poetic form. They didn’t whine about artistic use of pronouns. They simply adapted and wrote amazing music. He is somewhat attractive and he got lucky on a television show. Unfortunately, he doesn’t possess the creativity necessary and he’s blaming the record label as stifling his creativity. He should probably go back on tour with Queen and continue to ride the success of a truly amazing musician, Freddy Mercury.
