A “refreshed” Joan Rivers laments today’s red carpet scene: “Nobody looks like a fool anymore.”

When I posted yesterday’s Lunch Break Video of Bette Davis and Joan Rivers from 22 years ago, it made me realize that I miss Joan’s real face! You gotta wonder if the mirrors work in her house judging from this quote she gives to the Associated Press in a new interview:

“I haven’t had as much [plastic surgery] thinks. You have to know how much to do and when to do it. I recommend doing a little bit at a time, otherwise you look like you’ve been through a wind tunnel. Robert Redford looks like he’s in the Witness Protection Program. He could actually kill a man and get away with it now. (Laughs).”

Hmmm. Seems like Joan is in that same program!

Anyway, for a 76 year old woman, she still looks pretty good even if she doesn’t look much like herself.

Joan has always been such a workhorse whether she’s doing stand-up, hawking stuff on QVC, or telling someone off on The Celebrity Apprentice. On Wednesday, Joan’s new TV Land series How’d You Get So Rich premieres then Sunday, she is the “honoree” of a celebrity roast on Comedy Central.

“Kathy Griffin is the roast mistress, and we’re very good friends,” Joan tells the AP. “Some of the roasters will be Robin Quivers from Howard Stern, Lily Tomlin, Carl Reiner and Brad Garrett. These are not typical roasters … I say, “Enjoy yourselves,” because when I turn around and give it back to them, I’m going to give it back both barrels.”

Joan’s career has had many, many incarnations including being the first permanent guest host of The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson, winning an Emmy for her old daytime talk show, being nominated for a Tony Award, writing two best selling memoirs and even being the permanent center square on Hollywood Squares for several seasons.

But in more recent years, she became best-known for her gigs as a red carpet interviewer – and fashion critic – for major awards shows. She was usually teamed with daughter Melissa Rivers.

Joan insists that she doesn’t miss it: “Not at all. It changed. Melissa and I were the first to do it. We turned going into a building into an event. Now, God forbid you say Nicole Kidman doesn’t look gorgeous. Her publicist then won’t let you have Tom Hanks. Plus, they’re all dressed. Nobody looks like a fool anymore. Nowadays you even recognize the jewelry because it’s all borrowed.”

One Remark

  1. I recently recorded Joan’s “Roast”. Fantastic and brilliant. All concerned were hillarious – especially Queen Rivers. Love that girl who has been and still is, so very very funny. The delivery amazing. I cannot clear my tape as have to watch it as a daily tonic!! Am a 73 yrs. old female going on 74 and thanks for all the enjoyment over the years. xxx
