I talked to the publicist for the Australian surf film Newcastle on Friday and he has promised to send me a DVD of the film this week so I’ll give it a look and post a review later this week. I’ve just watched the four-minute trailer (posted below) and the surf scenes are beautiful and, well, so are the actors! If you watch the trailer, I warn you that it is NSFW as there are some bare bottoms and frontal bits shown in a few scenes.

Scandalous!

I remember that Newcastle had screened at Outfest last summer but it was a late showing and I had already seen 2-3 films that day and was so done you could stick a fork in me! It’s about three surfing brothers. Rising surf star Jesse chases waves and girls and is battling his resentful older brother who is a former surfing champion. Meanwhile, gay brother Fergus develops a crush on one of Jesse’s surfing pals.

The movie was written and directed by American Dan Castle and stars Lachlan Buchanan,  Xavier Samuel, Shane Jacobson, Barry Otto and Joy Smithers.

According to the Australian newspaper The Herald, US critics have not been kind to the film, praising the Newcastle backdrops and surfing action but lambasting its coming-of-age plot and performances with “the most enthusiastic reviews have come from gay audiences and publications.”
