The controversial “Bruno” photo shoot with high school football players and other endless promotion

Brunofootball

Look, I know what they say about all piblicity being good publicity but I am already sick to death on Bruno!

I have not yet seen the upcoming comedy starring Sacha Baron Vohen but between a stunt with Eminem on the MTV Movie Awartds, a lap dance on Conan O’Brien on The Tonight Show and prtovocative cover spread in GQ, I feel like I’ve already OD’d on Bruno.

Then there is this: Bruno is a fictionalized gay fashion reporter – originated on Cohen’s Da Ali G Show -who interviews interviews unsuspecting guests about various topics including fashion and pop culture but mostly he finds a way to talk about homosexuality.

The latest controvery involvong Cohen and the Bruno character revolves around the GQ cover shoot which took place at Birmingham High School in LA.

Los Angeles Unified School District Supt. Ramon C. Cortines told the LA Tines that he was taking “appropriate personnel action” against Principal Marcia Coates and Athletic Director Rick Prizant for allowing  Cohen to use the school’s football team in a photo shoot.

“I don’t believe that there is a place on any high school in America, including Los Angeles, for photos such as these,” Cortines said in a news release issued by his office. “I think those that think it’s no big deal generally don’t have children on campus. I’ve gotten e-mails from grandparents, all sorts of adults … who are embarrassed by this and believe this shouldn’t have happened.”

At this time in the struggle fior LGBT equal rights, I’m personally  not wild about such a broad stereotype getting all the headlines. There are so many admirable real-life gay people I’d rather see on the cover of GQ etc. But Cohen has the right to entertain and be silly.

Still, I’ll be glad when the movie finally hit s theaters on July 10 so we can be through with all the damned promotion and all the stupid stunts. You know it’s bad when even I’m sick of seeing some dude’s naked body on magazine covers!
