2010 Greggys: Straight Ally of the Year is Kathy Griffin for her staunch support of LGBT equality

When it has been time to step up and speak out in favor of same-sex marriage, against Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, and about the bullying that has led to too many gay teens to kill themselves, Kathy Griffin has been there with clarity, conviction, and with the facts.

She just gets better all the time.

This two-time Emmy winner for My Life on the D-List shows up at rallies and benefits for marriage equality and against Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and has used her experiences on her popular Bravo show.

She also knows when to get serious. Kathy did not crack a joke during the entire hour of a panel King hosted on teen bullying that also included Wanda Sykes, Nate Berkus, Tim Gunn, Chely Wright and Lance Bass.

Kathy announced that she would be donating her entire salary from her concert at the Gibson Ampitheatre in Universal City earlier this month to The Trevor Project.

Kathy has also released a video where she makes the claim that “trickle down homophobia” from political and religious leaders is to blame for making gays feel inferior and for the bullying that has led to the suicides.

“All you anti-gay public figures, and you know who you are, you have the blood of these dead teens in your hands,” she says.
She also reaches out in the video: “LGBT folks, I’ve met you, I’ve seen you at my shows. I know you’re there. Even in the Bible belt where you think you’re alone, you’re not alone. I see you and there’s help. … Even if you’re in a very Republican area or a conservative town, you’re not alone. Newsflash: if 10 to 12% of the entire country is gay, so are the people in your neighborhood. And there’s nothing wrong with them, and there’s nothing wrong with you.”

2 Remarks

  1. Of all the Greggys awards this year, so far this is my favorite winner. Kathy has showed unflinching support and action for the LGBT community. On top of all that she’s a great entertainer. My absolute favorite. You made a great choice Greg! I’m really enjoying seeing who you pick and even try to predict some possible winners that you might choose.

  2. Great choice, Greg!
