Wishing a very happy 78th birthday to the beloved television icon Mary Tyler Moore!

http://nohway.files.wordpress.com/2009/10/mary_tyler_moore_2002.jpgAnyone over the age of 40 (I’m still only admitting to 39) most certainly loves Mary Tyler Moore. Her seven years as Mary Richards were seven of the best years of any television show that has ever aired as were her five years before that as Laura Petrie on The Dick Van Dyke Show.

Hard to believe, but our Mary turns 78 today!

She doesn’t act much anymore and has had some health problems in recent years, but she remains beloved.

Mary’s first television job came just after high school graduation and she went on to have one of the most glorious careers in television history winning seven Emmys (four for her sitcom, two for The Dick Van Dyke Show and one for the TV film Stolen Babies).

Mary made several stabs at other series in the 80s but none could match her two classics and were short-lived. But she was nominated for an Oscar for Ordinary People and won a Tony Award for the play Whose Life is It Anyway. She has shined in both comedy and drama with my favorite Mary roles including playing Ben Stiller’s Jewish mother in Flirting With Disaster and the television films The Last Best Year and Heartsounds.

Happy birthday Mary!

Below are some MTM Show and DVD Show moments but first, an Oprah Winfrey Show clip from 1997 when Oprah is completely surprised by Mary whose sitcom Oprah watched religiously.

Her scream when Mary walks out onto the stage is one of the great moments in the 25-year history of her daytime show.

4 Remarks

  1. Greg, thank you for posting this. And allow me to add my well wishes to this wonderful lady! I count myself as one of the many who loves MTM and enjoyed all the MTM show gems.

  2. OMG, Greg! I had to write again for a SECOND thank you!

I composed that comment after I’d read your article, but before I viewed the videos. That first one with Oprah imitating MTM’s show opening was PRICELESS! Thank you for bringing that to your column!

  3. In the words of Isaac Mizrahi (from the documentary “Unzipped”): “Why do I love Mary Tyler Moore? Because I’m an American, and I’m not a stone.”

  4. Mary Tyler Moore is one of my all time favorite actresses. I remember watching some episodes of The Mary Tyler Moore Show when I was a young child back in the ’70s.

I got to stay up late on saturday nights watching TV with my mother and older brother watching MTM, Bob Newhart and Carol Burnett. CBS was a powerhouse back in the ’70s producing some of the greatest programming ever made.

I have never tired of watching The Mary Tyler Moore Show. The show is one of those rare glistening gems that you can watch over and over and over and never tire of.

I wish Mary well, and a Happy Belated Birthday!
