Wishing a happy 97th birthday to Doris Day!

The top photo is Doris Day today, at 97!

It’s been a nice, long life for one of the biggest movie stars of the 1940s, 50s and 60s (Calamity Jane, Pillow Talk, The Pajama Game, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Lullaby of Broadway), a huge TV star in the 70s (The Doris Day Show) and a huge recording star (Secret Love, Que Sera, Sera).

She all but retired from showbiz in the mid-70s but did re-emerge in the 80s to host the show Doris Day and Friends and in 1989 was presented with the Cecil B. Demille Award at the Golden Globe Awards. Miss Day also received a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004 and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement in 2006. No doubt she would receive an honorary Academy Award for her film career if she would agree to attend the ceremony which is not likely.

We don’t often see Miss Day in public anymore but I hope she’s having a happy life in Carmel where she has lived for many years.

Hi Greg… just a note… the opening title states happy 87th instead of happy 97th.

Sorry, Greg: she wasn’t one of the biggest, she was the biggest female star of all time. By a wide margin. 10 years among the top 10 box office stars, and 4 as the #1 star in the world. Both Streisand and Roberts equaled her 10 years but Julia was #1 only one year and Barbra never.

  3. Always loved Doris Days as a youngster in comedy too : Daisies?. Serious actress given the opportunity: Love Me Or Leave Me!
Then a competition for a DD look-alike in South Africa who flew to US to meet her idol – I was so jealous as a male fan.

Then her sad turn of fate with her Agent / Husband / or Manager/ somewhere I read flitted away her entire fortune many years ago? How sad

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY Doris Day.

    Michael (68yrs)

  4. Thanks Jimmy! Fixed it. :)
