Wishing a happy 75th birthday to the great Patti LaBelle! Enjoy some of her memorable performances

I may not write about her as much as my other divas (Cher, Diana, Barbra and LuPone) but I absolutely adore Patti LaBelle.

Today is her 75th birthday and she is a singer who has only grown more beautiful and whose warmth and kindness radiates in her performances and her interactions with fans.

She was lead singer of Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles in the 60s then transformed into lead singer of the renamed LaBelle in the 1970s with the huge hit Lady Marmalade.

But it wasn’t until the 1980s that we really got to enjoy and appreciate Patti LaBelle the solo superstar. She’s won a Grammy, had huge hits (On Our Own, If You Asked Me Too, New Attitude) and dazzled us in concert and in so many memorable television appearances where she just lets that voice – that magnificent voice – soar.

Here are some Patti performances and appearances to enjoy on her birthday.

One Remark

  1. Great share, Greg. Patti is a soul-sistah of note. The way she plays with her voice is truly unique. ‘Over the Rainbow’ is the stuff of goosebumps. I have a couple of friends who can’t stand her voice, such a manifestation of their shallowness. I favour Patti over her alumni, other than Aretha, of course. You would have seen the YouTube of Aretha doing ‘I Dreamed A Dream’ at one of the Clinton inaugurations. Wow, it blew me away. Phwoaar!!!!!

Also, Greg, do post the YouTube of Joey Niceforo’s version of ‘The Winner Takes It All’. Never mind a gorgeous man, this is the ultimate melding of the perfect voice for a song with a massive symphonic orchestra, done at the Abbey Road studio in London. I’ve watched it all of 25 times. Double phwoar!!

Thanks for great work, Greg, expanding our mind view in the gay cultural desert that is South Africa. Lots of love, Vernon from Johannesburg.
