Wilson Cruz on first time he saw ‘Angels in America’

Wilson Cruz, who starred in RENT on Broadway, posted this nice story on social media yesterday: When I was a 20 year old actor in the middle of shooting my first series I went to NYC and all I wanted to do was see Angels in America. It was the biggest thing on Broadway and I never thought I’d get in. I took a chance and walked up to the box office window and asked if there were any tickets available. The gay man behind the window started to tell me they were sold out. As he looked up at me he stopped and said, “Umm, are you the kid from My So-Called Life?” I said, yes, and he took a deep breath, rolled his eyes and said, “Hold on.” He walked away and came back with a ticket for both shows and said, “These are house seats. YOU, of all people need to see this.” I thanked him profusely, paid for the tix and commenced to have my world turned upside down. On that rainy day, I realized the REAL power of the theater and came to understand my own power as an actor. That night, I realized that, I too, wanted to use my gifts to, not only entertain, but enlighten and make some change and the opportunity was already before me. I went back to LA and soon there after we began to shoot an episode called, “So-Called Angels.” What a gift! #worldtheatreday
