Will DC Comics’ Green Lantern be gay?
It has already been reported that a major DC Comics character would be revealed to be gay next month.
The comics site Bleeding Cool is reporting that the character will be the original Green Lantern, Alan Scott.
Green Lantern possesses a power ring and power lantern that gives the user great control over the physical world as long as the wielder has sufficient willpower and strength to wield it. The ring is one of the most powerful weapons in the universe and can be very dangerous.
The original Green Lantern, Alan Scott, was introduced in 1940 but his adventures ceased some time after WWII when comic books declined in popularity. The character was revived in 1959 but this time his alter-ego was Hal Jordan. Subsequent alter-egos include Guy Gardner, John Stewart, Kyle Rayner and Sinestro.
It was Hal Jordan who Ryan Reynolds portrayed in the 2011 Green Lantern feature film which grossed about $220 million worldwide.
Judd Winick, who first gained attention as a cast member of MTV’s The Real World: San Francisco, won a GLAAD Media Award for writing a Green Lantern a storyline in which an assistant of Kyle Rayner’s emerged as a gay character in Green Lantern #137 (June 2001). In Green Lantern #154 (November 2001) the story entitled “Hate Crime” gained media recognition when the assistant, Terry, was brutally beaten in a homophobic attack.
DC Comics relaunched Green Lantern with issue #1 in September 2011 as part of the company wide relaunch. This new series stars both Jordan and Sinestro as Green Lanterns.
The news about Green Lantern comes as Marvel Comics character, Northstar, will be marrying his boyfriend in an upcoming issue of Astonishing X-Men. Northstar proposes in the current issue.
