Why Jason Collins and son of anti-gay “Duck Dynasty” patriarch did not meet at State of the Union
One of the most famous openly gay athletes in the US sat less 20 feet away from the son of one of the most famous anti-gay reality TV personalities in the country during this week’s State of the Union address.
But Jason Collins, an NBA veteran, and Willie Robertson of Duck Dynasty fame did not get a chance to exchange any words.
‘We passed each other in the hall and that was about it,’ Collins tells TMZ. ‘They were moving him from one Republican to another Republican [for photos].’
Collins was the invited guest of First Lady Michelle Obama while Robertson was invited to attend by Louisiana Congressman Vance McAllister.
‘I wish that he wasn’t moving so quick and we could have had an opportunity to talk or have a brief conversation,’ Collins says. ‘It starts with a conversation – it starts with extending your hand.’
Robertson’s father, Phil, caused an uproar last month when he said disparaging things about gay people in an interview with GQ magazine including equating homosexuality with bestiality.
the elder Robertson was briefly suspended from the show which returned earlier this month to lower ratings.
