Why Jane Lynch is trending on Twitter today
Emmy-winning actress and TV game show host Jane Lynch has been the top trending topic for big stretches of the day for a tweet directed at Senator Elizabeth Warren who had a dust-up with rival presidential candidate Pete Buttigeg during Thursday’s Democratic Party debate.
Lynch wrote: Hello everyone. Billionaires in wine caves have as much right to say who gets to be president as waitresses in diners and plumbers in my bathroom. Class warfare is ugly, @ewarren Thanks for listening everyone.
During the debates Warren had called out Buttigieg for a lavish fundraiser he participated in at a winery in Napa Valley.
“The mayor just recently had a fundraiser that was held in a wine cave full of crystals and served $900-a-bottle wine,” Warren said. “Think about who comes to that. He had promised that every fundraiser he would do would be open-door, but this one was closed-door. We made the decision years ago that rich people in smoke-filled rooms would not pick the next president of the United States. Billionaires in wine caves should not pick the next president of the United States.”
Buttigieg responded by noting that he was the only candidate on the debate stage who wasn’t a millionaire or billionaire and said to Warren: “This is the problem with issuing purity tests that you yourself cannot pass.”
Lynch, best known for her role as Sue Sylvester on Glee, has hosted events for Buttigieg and has donated to his campaign.

The Twitter backlash against Lynch has been brutal – and quite clever at times. Here is a sampling:

"Welcome back to Jane Lynch's Game Night! My guests this week are Jeff Bezos, Melinda Gates, Mohammad bin Salman, Laurene Powell Jobs, the Sultan of Brunei and a random plumber who's been stuck in my bathroom for three to four weeks who can say."
