Why Elton John is so proud of Prince Harry
Like some kind of proud uncle, Elton John is praising Prince Harry for seeking counseling in recent years to deal with the death of his mother.
It was 20 years ago this summer that Princess Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris and her friend John sang a special version of Candle in the Wind at her funeral.
‘Your bravery, honesty and humanity are a beacon in today’s world,’ the singer wrote to Harry in an Instagram post. ‘It’s a sign of strength to ask for help, not weakness. Asking for help saved me from the mental illness of my addictions. We all need help sometimes, and must never feel shame or stigma in doing so.’
He added the hashtags #AskForHelp and #StiffUpperLipsDontWork
It was not until three years ago that Harry, 32, sought professional help at the urging of his brother Prince William.
‘I can safely say that losing my mum at the age of 12, and therefore shutting down all of my emotions for the last 20 years, has had a quite serious effect on not only my personal life but my work as well,’ he tells British journalist Bryony Gordon on the mental health podcast Mad World.
He added: ‘I have probably been very close to a complete breakdown on numerous occasions when all sorts of grief and sort of lies and misconceptions and everything are coming to you from every angle.’
