When Tom Daley finally saw ‘Milk’

When Olympic diver Tom Daley began dating Dustin Lance Black in 2013, he had never seen the movie that won Black the Academy Award for screenwriting.

The film, of course, is Milk which tells the story of slain civil rights leader Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man elected to public office in California history.

‘It was a good eight weeks after I met Lance that I watched Milk,’ Daley says in a YouTube video posted over the weekend.

‘He actually made me watch it on a train ride home from London to Plymouth the first time that he came over.’

Daley, 24, was impressed.

‘Obviously it is one of the most amazing films and I’m not just saying that to be biased and the fact that he’s my fiancee,’ he says.

‘If you haven’t seen Milk you should definitely go and watch it because for someone my age, I had no idea about LGBT issues as of 20,30,40, 50 years ago.’

Black has written and directed other films since then including the upcoming ABC miniseries When We Rise about the gay rights movement from the 1969 Stonewall riots up through today.

‘Laws may have changed and progressed a lot but people’s attitudes are still yet to change,’ Daley says.

‘I think there’s still a lot more to come what it’s like today compared to what it was like 50 years ago is like apples and elephants – it’s like two completely different ends of the spectrum.

‘I thank Lance for giving me that insight with the movie Milk.’
