Wednesday Morning Man: John Gallagher Jr.

At the age of 25, John Gallagher Jr. is already one of Broadway’s biggest stars.
A Tony Award winner for Spring Awakening, John is a lead in the highly-anticipated new musical American Idiot which is in previews at the St. James Theatre and officially opens next week.
The show follows the journey of a new generation of young Americans as they struggle to find meaning in a post 9/11 world. It includes every song from Green Day’s acclaimed album of the same name and several songs from the band’s 21st Century Breakdown album.
John made his Broadway debut in the play Rabbit Hole and has done guest spots on such television series as The West Wing, Law & Order: SVU and NYPD Blue, among others.

In 2007, my 50-year-old daughter, 14-year-old grandson, and I (a 70+ grandmother) saw “Spring Awakening” in New York–twice! Our hotel was a couple doors away from the theater, and we talked with John several times as he was just “hanging out” visiting with fans. My grandson was going through a difficult experience of school bullying at the time, and we talked with John about it. When the road production came to Phoenix, I attended an advance event for those with concern about the play’s content. I was grateful to stand and say, unequivocally, that it made a tremendously needed statement about adolescence. We’re all Green Day fans, and we’re going to try to get ourselves to New York to see “American Idiot.”
