WATCH: Tennis legends Martina Navratilova and Chrissie Evert talk about today’s top women players
What do Karolína Plíšková and Simona Halep have in common? They have both been the number one ranked female tennis player in the world this year and neither have ever won a grand slam singles title. It’s terrible for the game when this happens because it makes the top ranking less special. Keep in mind that since early 2004, no one other than Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal,Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray have held the men’s top ranking. Combined they have won 50 slam singles titles. There was a time between 1975 and 1986 that either Chris Evert or Martina Navratilova were ranked number one except for a 22 week period in 1980 when Tracy Austin was on top. Since each had won 18 majors, who better than Evert and Navratilova to talk about the state of today’s women’s game which is wide open in the absence of Serena Williams?
