WATCH: For Throwback Thursday, Gio Benitez shares his worst on-air mistake from a decade ago
I’ve never shared this video, but I’ve kept it for nearly ten years thinking someday I would. Sharing it now on this #ThrowbackThursday and #ThankfulThursday because, after showing it to a group of @ABCNews interns, I realize it might help others who at times don’t feel good enough, don’t feel smart enough, or don’t feel worthy enough. I was supposed to offer a short “tease” to let viewers know what story was coming up, but I made a terrible mistake. I started saying that two students had been “gunned down,” but they had actually been robbed at gunpoint. What came after was an absolute train-wreck of a broadcast and I was sure it would be my last day on the air. Instead, my boss at the time, @adrienne_roark, took me around to chat with the veteran reporters about their worst on-air moments and how they learned from them. If this helps you in any small way, then I’m glad I shared it. And yes, you have permission to laugh. You just know I’ve been laughing at it for a decade!
