Video: See Ann Curry say goodbye on “Today”

Ann Curry was a trouper until the end, getting through this morning’s Today Show in businesslike fashion until the final 10 minutes when she announced her departure to viewers.

She turned ‘into a sob sister’ as she made her remarks and who could blame her?

Matt [Lauer] and I, and everyone who sits on this couch, we often call ourselves a family, but you are the real TODAY show family,” she said. “You are why I have ventured into dangerous places and interviewed dictators and jumped off of planes and off of bridges, and climbed mountains and landed in the South Pole, and convinced the Dalai Lama to come live in our studio. I have loved you, and I have wanted to give you the world. And I still do.”

After the messy Jane Pauley-Deborah Norville transition more than two decades ago, it is unimaginable that something like this could be so badly handled with news leaks and the feeling that Curry was not treated well or fairly.

The network wisely did not introduce her replacement yet because that will also be tricky. Norville was made a villain through no fault of her own and Samantha Guthrie could suffer the same fate if she is the choice.

Curry saves NBC some ill will by agreeing to remain with the network: “I will still be a part of the TODAY show family,” she said. “But I’m going to have a new title and a new role.”

The title is TODAY Anchor at Large and National and International Correspondent for NBC News, She will lead a new team covering stories spanning the globe. She’ll anchor prime-time specials and report for TODAY, Nightly News, Rock Center, Dateline and MSNBC, and will have a major presence across all digital properties.

4 Remarks

  1. And by “TODAY Anchor at Large” they really mean “give the audience the appearance that the powers at be still want her, but her face will never be seen on TODAY again”.

  2. It’s been a downhill slide for the Today Show ever since Meredith Viera left a year ago. Ann is an excellent reporter, but didn’t have the extra something that Katie Couric and Meridith had as co-hosts with Matt Lauer. I have serious doubts whether Savannah Guthrie will be any better.

  3. A bum rap. I thought she was damn good!

  4. I don’t always watch the show, but when I do, I can truthfully say that I found nothing wrong with Ann – always pleasant and competent. Everyone talks about Meredith Viera, but it seemed that everytime I watched the show I would hear: “Meredith has the day off.” I think the actions of the network were very cruel.
