Video: Colin Firth thanks “A Single Man” director Tom Ford for making him more worldly and better groomed
Since Colin Firth lost out at the Golden Globes, Screen Actors guild awards and just about everywhere else to Jeff Bridges, it was nice to see him win the best actor award at the BAFTA Awards in London yesterday for A Single Man.
He shared a little tidbit that it seems director Tom Ford didn’t know about: Colin was writing an email to Ford in which he was about to turn down the role but was interrupted before he could push send by a refrigerator repair man who came to the door. Colin thanked that repairman for inadvertantly stopping him from rejecting one of the best roles of his career.
He also paid a wonderful tribute to Ford, a first time director: “An encounter with Tom Ford is to come away feeling resuscitated, a little more worldly, better groomed, more fragrant, and more nominated than one has ever been before. … I have worked with a lot of great directors and he’s up there with the best of them.
Firth said backstage that “the fridge is still not fixed. You could say he did a better job in terms of really directing my particular destiny than the fridge.”
Speaking about his Oscar chances, he said: “My chances were one in five before and they’re probably one in five at best now. I think the competition is pretty terrifying, quite frankly.”
