Van Hansis on why he didn’t come out during ATWT: “I was completely green … and honestly, I was scared”

The three-time Emmy nominated actor Van Hansis first became familiar to us as Luke Snyder on As the World Turns.

We knew that Luke was gay and involved with Noah then later sexy Dr. Reid but we never knew, for sure anyway, that the actor himself was gay.

Van, currently starring in the terrific web series The Eastsiders talks about his sexuality with his Eastsiders director Kit Williamson in an interview for The Fight magazine.

Here’s an excerpt from the interview:

You were out in your personal life, but you didn’t speak out about your sexual orientation at the start of your career. What was your hesitation?

I guess it was a combination of a lot of things—It was my first job, it was a different time back then in regards to LGBT stories being told—I mean, the Luke story was groundbreaking at the time. Now, I think every remaining soap has a gay storyline. I was completely green, fresh out of college, and honestly, I was scared.

You were nominated for three Daytime Emmys for playing Luke Snyder on “As the World Turns,” and Luke and Noah’s storyline was a first for soap audiences around the world.  Were you aware that you were making history at the time?

The reaction was really fantastic from the fans. I feel like Luke and Noah were embraced as characters. Of course I think part of their popularity came from the fact that they were gay and that was new and exciting and different at the time. But there were a lot of fans who liked them for them—not because of their sexuality but because of their character’s strengths and flaws. I think there were long time fans who started off not liking the storyline for the gay content of it who were won over by the love story—indeed, at the time I got a lot of mail saying such—and Luke and Noah helped change and shape their views about the LGBT community.

As far as making history at the time—I knew because I was being told that by people who knew the world—I had never watched soaps, so the historical part of the show didn’t truly resonate until I started getting response from people whose lives the story changed. I didn’t really get the weight of it at the time.

  1. It’s never too late to come out and be yourself. This bit of info doesn’t matter to Van’s fans. We love him.

Wonderful! I love his web series, and truthfully I have often thought that he’s not quite gay enough for the show. I think that really means he’s just perfect.

  3. So glad that he can now truly be himself in public. He’s right that the times have changed since he was on As The World Turns. My only wish for him is to find love and happiness.

  4. I wish I was handsome like him.

  5. it’s about that fur! YUM..and to know that his is gay..makes him that much sexier!

  6. Well, Perez Hilton outed him when he was at ATWT, also mentioning his partner at the time, the theater actor Tyler Hanes. He didn’t say anything but nevertheless he didn’t avoid being photographed with his partner, even at an after event for ATWT and also when they went together to gay march to Washington, don’t remember witch one. So he was in a “crystal closet”, like is said.

  7. Van u r a superb nuanced actor more complex the script the better you fill out the role. There was no need to come out on the show, that would dilute the quality of appreciation of ur talent. Sadly the omission of the sensual and sexual qualities made for inauthenticity: top./bottom, cut vs not, snuggling, boxers vs briefs, i,e., the humanizing details: did u wear or sleep with Noah’s green shirt? Did u ever discuss who would stomp on the glass when marrying Noah, what religion for the kids,…never went to shul with Noah?
