Tuesday Morning Man: Shawn Barber!

Canadian Olympic pole vaulter Shawn Barber took to Facebook on Monday to announce to the world that he is gay.

‘Gay and proud!’ the 22 year old wrote in a brief but wonderful post.

‘Thank you to my parents for being such a great support. I continue to grow as a person and have a great support group. My parents are my greatest support and have helped me through a lot recently. To my friends, you are always my friends and I love you too!’

It is so encouraging to see young people like this leading the way!

Shawn finished tenth last summer at the Rio Olympics and a year earlier, he had won the world championship in the pole vault.. While competing for the University of Akron, Shawn set the NCAA indoor record in the pole vault at 5.19 meters.

Outsports notes that ‘Barber instantly becomes one of the highest-profile and most successful current openly gay athletes anywhere in the world.’

2 Remarks

  1. What a cutie! He can pole vault at my house any time he wants to.

  2. He has a smile that I would love to be on the other side of everyday of my life. Omgoodness he is just ADORABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!! An Olympic athlete that didn’t win or medal but is WINNING now because his mind and body can be free because holding onto something so important and not sharing your true-self with others (especially love-ones) is vital. I have to add: “What a BODY!!!!” because besides his ‘winning smile’ that literally melts your heart and that beautiful ‘Red Hair’and those freckles that I literally want to kiss each and every one of them but this man looks extremely strong but so tender too. Talk about having ‘body definition’!!!!! I’m so IN LIKE with him and will be stalking his social media but routing for his success. Hopefully he could help ease some minds when it comes down to sports and the idea of the LGTBQ athletes that never get the opportunity while they are in the sport to be their true-authentic self. Being “OUT AND PROUD” seems like a theme so outdated but it is so necessary in the new climate and state of our world. It’s nice whenever someone comes out but it seems even better when they are in the public’s eye to be who they are and being themselves. No agenda, just love!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
