Tuesday Morning Man: Nick Thoman!
I’m finally getting the hang out this Olympics thing and staying away from the results of things until I can watch them on NBC about half a day or more after they happen!
So I had no idea that a cutie pie named Nick Thoman was going to win the silver medal in the 100-meter backstroke until watching the race last night.
Nick finished behind fellow American and Greg In Hollywood Morning Man alum Matt Grevers.
The swimmer is a Cincinnati native whose grandfather once held the world record in the event. Grevers finished in 52.16 seconds and Thoman in 52.92.
The 26-year-old Thoman almost wasn’t around to achieve Olympic glory.
After finishing fifth and sixth in the two backstroke events at the 2008 Olympic Trials, he figured he would retire and move on with his life. But while swimming at one more national meet because he had a free plane ticket, he almost broke a world record.
“My coach was like, ‘Well, you’ve got to keep swimming now,’ ” Thoman said. “And I was like, ‘God, I’ve got to keep swimming now.’ ”
In preparation for his races, Thoman went on a self-imposed social media blackout but after winning the silver, he did log on to Twitter and wrote: ‘Couldn’t help but get on twitter this morning when I saw I had several THOUSAND new followers. Thanks for all of the congratulatory tweets!’
