Tuesday Morning Man: Ian Thorpe!

Retired Australian swimmer Ian Thorpe turns 38 today!

I hope it’s a happy birthday for the man who has won five Olympic gold medals – three gold and two silver medals – and was the most successful athlete at the 2000 Summer Olympics.

When coming out publicly as a gay man in 2014 Thorpe said: “I’m comfortable saying I’m a gay man. And I don’t want people to feel the same way I did. You can grow up, you can be comfortable and you can be gay.” He added “I am telling the world that I am gay … and I hope this makes it easier for others now, and even if you’ve held it in for years, it feels easier to get it out.”

Thorpe retired from swimming in 2006 then attempted a comeback in 2012 but failed to qualify for the Olympics that year. He has battled bouts with crippling depression and was hospitalized in 2014.

Hope he’s doing well.
