Tribute: Vivian Vance was born 110 years ago today
As Ethel Mertz on I Love Lucy, she will forever be television’s greatest sidekick.
The proof is that more than 65 years since the debut of the classic sitcom, we are still watching and laughing at the antics of Lucy and Ethel and celebrating their friendship.
Vivian Vance, a 1954 Emmy winner for her performance as Ethel, was born 110 years ago today.
While Lucy and Ethel cannot be topped, Miss Vance and Lucille Ball came close in the follow-up series The Lucy Show as Lucy Carmichael and Vivian Bagely. They starred together for three seasons before Vance quit due to a grueling cross-country commute. The show went on for three more years but was not near as good without Vivian. who still made a guest appearance once a year.

My favorite Ethel scene….when they were trying to get money to go with Ricky and Fred on the tour, with their scheme of the Ladies Overseas Aid raffle, and the Feds were onto them…when the old lady of the Actual Ladies Overseas Aid showed up, and Lucy saw a way Out of the trouble, she told Ethel to give her the money.
Ethel, completely confused, looked at the old lady, then back to Lucy and said, ‘Is She going With us?!’

My favorite Ethel scene is when they stop by her home town —Ethel Mae Potter we never forgot her— and she gets to sing her signature tune —Shortnin’ Bread!

Lucy always credited Vivian for being crucial to the success of the Lucy shows. they really did consider each other a friend. Amazing that she would be 110, how great she is still remembered.
