Today’s Morning Man: Jeremy Pope!

Wishing a happy 32nd birthday to Jeremy Pope, a gorgeous gay actor who has been nominated for an Emmy, a Grammy and two Tonys.

In 2023, he received a Golden Globe nomination for his stupendous performance in the film The Inspection in which he portrayed a gay man who defiantly endures brutal training at a Marine Corps boot camp, seeking approval from his homophobic mother. He should have been nominated for an Oscar for that performance.

His next film, The Collaboration, is one I am really interested in seeing. It is a look into the unique and rich friendship between two of the worlds most interesting artists, Pop Art legend Andy Warhol (Paul Bettany), and the King of Neo Expressionism, Jean-Michel Basquiat (Pope).

In 2021, Pope had a main role as Christopher, Blanca’s boyfriend in the third and final season of Ryan Murphy’s TV series Pose and had one of the lead roles in the Netflix series Hollywood.

In 2019, he became the sixth person in Tony history to be nominated for performance twice in the same year. He was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play for his turn at Pharus in Choir Boy and for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical for his turn as Temptations’ Eddie Kendricks in Ain’t Too Proud—The Life and Times of the Temptations. What’s more, Choir Boy marked his Broadway debut. Pope returned to the theater earlier this year starring as painter Jean-Michel Basquiat opposite Paul Bettany as pop artist Andy Warhol in The Collaboration.

Pope originated the role of Pharus in the Off-Broadway production of Choir Boy in 2013. It’s a play by Oscar-winning Moonlight writer Tarell Alvin McRaney. He also played the role in Atlanta and Los Angeles. He began as Kendricks in Ain’t Too Proud for it 2017 premiere at Berkeley Repertory Company and pre-Broadway engagements in Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and Toronto.

Other theatre credits include Invisible Thread (Second Stage Theater) and The View Upstairs (Lynn Redgrave Theater). On screen, Pope starred in The Ranger, which premiered at the 2018 SXSW Film Festival. His singles New Love and Feel So Good which are available on iTunes.
