Today’s Holiday Tune: Karen Carpenter sings my all-time fave “Merry Christmas Darling”

This is, hands down, my favorite Christmas song – ever. So what better way to kick off this holiday weekend.

Merry Christmas Darling was written by Richard Carpenter and Frank Pooler was made a classic by the gorgeous delivery of the late, great Karen Carpenter who died in 1983.

The single of Merry Christmas Darling went to number one on Billboard’s Christmas singles chart in 1970, and did again in 1971 and 1973. It was then included in The Carpenters 1978 Christmas Portrait album and Karen performed it on their ABC Christmas special that year.

It just doesn’t get any better than this.

One Remark

  1. I am in awe of talented women like Aretha Franklin, Adele, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, and so many others. They have so much power, so much beauty, and it’s a joy to hear them sing.

But Karen Carpenter had that undefinable extra. She could start singing and break your heart in five seconds flat. She was the most talented vocalist I will ever be priviledged to hear in my lifetime, and she will always be remembered. Most of the songs she’s famous for are pure pop, and if anyone else had sung them, they’d probably be forgotten completely.

But that amazing voice, that heartbreaking honesty, she made so many songs into classics.

Merry Christmas Darling is achingly beautiful. This is truly one of the best Christmas songs of all time.
