The verdict is in: Neil Patrick Harris is the toast of Broadway in “Hedwig and Angry Inch”

Will Neil Patrick Harris be placing a Tony Award next to his four Emmys?

It certainly seems possible judging from the stupendous reviews he has gotten this week during opening week of Hedwig and the Angry Inch on Broadway.

As a transgender East German punk rock singer, NPH is getting raves.

Here are excerpts from some of the major reviews starting with The New York Times which described NPH as ‘a bona fide Broadway star, the kind who can rule an audience with the blink of a sequined eyelid.’

NY Times critic Ben Brantley also wrote: ‘Mr. Harris is in full command of who he is and, most excitingly, what he has become with this performance. … With this show, Mr. Harris joins an elite club of musical-comedy male supernovas that has exactly one other member these days, Hugh Jackman.’

The Associated Press declares: Doogie Howser is long gone; the macho, tie-wearing Barney Stinson in How I Met Your Mother has left the building. That guy in The Smurfs film franchise is nowhere to be found, especially not strutting around in a pair of gold stilettos.  …  Before our eyes, Harris is opening another chapter in his exceptional show business career with this 90-minute show and he simply crushes it, holding nothing back, softening no edges, making no nice.
Entertainment Weekly writes: he’s less Iggy, more pop — and his threats to ”cut you, bitch” come off with more of a wink than actual menace. But in a bravura performance, the actor proves the perfect instrument for Hedwig’s transition into world-class superstardom. He’s honed his showmanship on four Tony Awards gigs, of course. But he’s looser here, and lewder, more spontaneous and quick on his pumps.

One Remark

  1. I sure hope NPH gets a Tony. He is so incredibly talented, and he sure looks awfully hot with no shirt on!
