The superb “Pariah” out on DVD today!

I’ve gone on the record saying that I think Kim Wayans was a revelation in Pariah.

She played the religious mother of a lesbian teen who is in deep denial of her daughter’s sexuality then enraged by it.

She conveyed a woman in deep pain  and even though the character is cruel in her rejection of her daughter, the mother does not come off as a villain because of the performance of Wayans.

See my earlier post HERE.

I snapped this photo of Kim at the GLAAD Media Awards and was about to give her a quick compliment when she just walked away – very rudely.

I’m sure she had plenty of things on her mind but it really left me feeling disappointed in her. She didn’t know who I was or that I would be writing about it on a blog and that’s not really the point anyway. When someone wants your picture at a public event, it usually means they are a fan.

Anyway, this does not take away from a really outstanding film that is available on DVD today. Directed by Dee Rees, the film also stars Adepero Oduye, Aasha Davis and Charles Parnell – all outstanding.

Oduye plays Alike, a Brooklyn teenager dealing with conflicting identities who risks friendship, heartbreak, and family in a desperate search for sexual expression.

Oduye earned an Independent Spirit Award nomination for best actress and was among the female performances that Meryl Streep gave a shout out to when she was accepting her Golden Globe Award for The Iron Lady earlier this year.

Rees received the Independent Spirit’s John Cassavetes Award which is given to the best feature made for under $500,000.

While Pariah is not her life story, Rees says there are similarities.

‘It’s the emotions I experienced that were the same,’ she said during the Los Angeles press junket for the film. ‘Who I was was not a choice. … I knew this film was a universal story. I’m excited to see it playing out and seeing people respond to it.’

Here is the film’s trailer:

One Remark

  1. Growing a bit of an ego there Greg? I’m sure she didn’t mean anything by it!
