“The Normal Heart” draws 1.4 million viewers

It took nearly 30 years for Larry Kramer’s landmark play The Normal Heart to be made as a movie and 1.4 million people tuned in to watch it Sunday on HBO.

The film, directed by Ryan Murphy, first aired at 9 pm and was watched by nearly 1 million viewers. A second airing immediately after garnered 435,000 viewers.

The film starring Mark Ruffalo, Matt Bomer and Julia Roberts ranks fifth among the 17 HBO films to have premiered on the network since 2010.

But the ratings were far lower than last year’s gay-themed Behind the Candelabra which premiered to 2.4 million viewers making it the most-watched debut for an HBO Films movie since 2004′s Something the Lord Made starring Alan Rickman.

Kramer’s autobiographical The Normal Heart tells the story of the early days of the AIDS epidemic in New York City. It also stars Taylor Kitsch, Jim Parsons, Joe Mantella and Alfred Molina.
