The must-see documentary “Matt Shepard is a Friend of Mine” opens in NYC today – LA next week

Last week, I watched a screener of Matt Shepard is a Friend of Mine and cried all over again over the loss of this young man.

I watched it in preparation for an interview I have next week with Matt’s close friend Michele Josue, who directed the film, and his father, Dennis Shepard.

But I want to give the film a shout out before the interview because it opens in NYC today and I want you to go see it this week if you live near there. For those of us in LA, it opens next week.

Michele and I spoke briefly on the phone last week and I thanked her for making the film, for allowing us to get to know Matt in a way we never had before. We see what a happy child he was and how loved he was by his family and many friends. We also learn about some tragic things that changed him forever and led to some depression.

At the time of his death in October 1998 – one month shy of his 22nd birthday – he was on the upswing though. Only to be brutally murdered by two homophobic thugs.

Michele has been working on the for over four years and it includes never-before-seen photos, rare video footage, and new revelations about Matt’s all-too-brief life. The interviews with his parents and his mentors and friends really do bring him to life.

Here is the trailer and a clip and expect more from me on this film next week:

Being a big fan of this site, I felt I need to leave a comment. I saw this touching and emotional documentary back in the fall in NYC. I also had the pleasure to meet and speak with Michele as well as Judy & Dennis Shepard. It was one of the most memorable evenings I had ever spent. I encourage everyone to see this film and to support the Matthew Shepard Foundation.

  2. Thanks for posting. A must-see important documentary and/or own on DVD.

  3. Was able to work with a local non profit last year and bring this film and the director to San Luis Obispo Pride. It is truly a moving and relevant film that should be seen by all. So personal and moving. It really brings to light Matthew Shepard as a person.
