The actress and AIDS activist, who died this morning of congestive heart failure at the age of 79, had said many times that the two great loves of her life were producer Mike Todd (pictured right) and actor Richard Burton (pictured below).

She married Todd in 1953 and they had a baby daughter named Liza. But after just 13 months of marriage, the Oscar-winning producer of Around the World in 80 Days died in a plane crash. She turned to Todd’s best friend, singer Eddie Fisher, who left his wife Debbie Reynolds and married Taylor.

But once she began filming Cleopatra opposite Burton in 1962, she had found her soul mate and they began an scandalous affair while she was still married to Fisher and Burton was married to his first wife Sybil. They were finally free to marry in 1964 and went on to make a series of films together including the acclaimed Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolfe?

The couple divorced in 1974 then remarried the next year. But they split again, for good, less than a year later. Elizabeth then met former Secretary of the Navy John Warner and  married him in late 1976. She worked tirelessly to get him elected to the United States Senate. He went on to serve 30 years but the marriage only last six as she grew bored in Washington DC and decided to return to acting and to Hollywood.

Her next marriage came nearly a decade later to, of all people, construction worker Fortensky who she had met while at the Betty Ford Center.

Taylor’s first marriage took place when she was just 18 to handsome hotel heir Nicky Hilton who turned out to be an alcoholic who bet the young actress. She left him after less than a year and shortly after married British actor Michael Wilding. Their marriage was over within five years but they were forever bonded by their two sons Michael and Christopher.
